Not Too Detty
In 2019, one of the themes for festivities was Detty December. A lot of people had so much fun that they attributed it to the Covid pandemic in 2020. The universe must have been upset with the amount of fun people had.
2021 ends in about 16 days. We are still in a pandemic (side-eyeing Omicron). Amid all this, people still want to rock December.
There are all sorts of social events—weddings, concerts, exhibitions and food festivals (these are my favourite, by the way). There's something happening every day.
December is a month when people tend to go overboard in splurging (really overboard). Some people end up spending all they have saved up for the year, and then start the new year empty. That's not a prudent way to do things.
January often feels like a "long month" partly because it comes up with so many bills such as school fees, rent and utilities. And partly because it is a slow month, especially for business people. Everyone seems to wait for the government to pass the budget, and what policies will come into force in the new year.
As tempting as it is, you cannot attend every event, you have to pick. If you don't have a "Detty" budget, you should draw up one. If you don't mind company, you can work out a budget with friends. One person could pay for the cab fare to the event, and another can pay for the cab fare back home. (Ride hailing services tend to be on permanent surge this period).
If you get “13th month pay” or bonuses, you can devote part of it to your “Detty budget.” Please invest as well. Bonuses and other extra income play a huge role in the journey to financial freedom.
What if one can't afford a "Detty" budget, does it mean being restricted to boredom? Not at all. You just have to tone down things a bit. Opt for a livestream rather than going for an event. You could decide to do Netflix and chill. Have a small cookout with family and friends.
Keep an eye on our social media handles during this period (if you have not all this while, this side-eye is for you). We could have some giveaways.
We also have a note on where to invest in 2022 in the works. Keep an eye out for that as well.
